There is currently inconsistency across end‑use sectors (e.g., FMCG, fashion, and pharmaceuticals) and supply chains in the terminology used to define, measure, and value sustainable materials. Building on the World Business Council for Sustainable Development’s (WBCSD) cross‑sectoral work on scaling adoption of alternative feedstocks, this session led by ERM will explore how business‑led cooperation can drive the development of consistent, widely understood, and measurable sustainability criteria for materials.

We will discuss:

  • How to establish cross-sector and supply chain–consistent terminology and definitions (e.g., sustainably managed biomass, recycled content, CO2-derived materials)
  • Which tools and approaches should be aligned to assess and value sustainability criteria for materials (e.g., life cycle assessment (LCA), renewable or recycled content, low toxicity, recyclability)
  • What metrics brands should use to assess and communicate the value of sustainable materials (e.g., carbon reduction, renewable or recycled content)
  • The roles of brands, standards bodies, and policymakers in driving consistency and adoption
